The history of Pöschl

The snuff salesman, Alois Pöschl, was 29 years of age when he decided to set up his own business. It was his vision to put the knowledge and expertise he had gained on the subject of snuff to the test, and to do so at his own expense. So on 24.12.1902 he founded the company "Alois Pöschl Tabakfabriken" in Landshut.

Landshut was a favourable location for two reasons: the water of the River Isar could drive the tobacco mills and - more important still - Landshut lies in the centre of the major snuff region: Lower Bavaria.

During the first few years the young, forward-looking company grew constantly. Soon the water-powered mills were replaced by more modern diesel engines. The breakthrough finally came with the "DOPPELAROMA" brand of snuff.

In 1935 the company founder's two sons, Alois and Wilhelm, entered the business and placed their main emphasis on sales with great success, and the company grew larger and larger. Expanding their range of products to include cigarettes and pipe tobacco in 1949 contributed to this development. Then in the 1970s the two brothers scored a real hit: they invented "GLETSCHERPRISE". A snuff which was especially mild and pleasant and which soon attracted a big following in the market
