Go back Our Grovsnus Black, Strong Portion ReviewLaunched in 2009 and made by Swedish Match in Göteborg, Sweden, Grovsnus Svart or Black is classified as a White type portion which means that the portions do not go thru the final step in the manufacturing process that adds a bit more moisture to them. By omitting this step, Grov Svart’s material remains black in color and a bit dryer than the regular types. We know what you’re saying, how can a white portion be black? Well, the material is the same soft, teabag type material that Swedish Match uses in all their portions just black in color instead of white. This is one of the unique traits in Grov Svart and the reason for the “Svart”, which means “black” in Swedish, in the name! The material is comfortable in the lip for as long as the flavor lasts which is about 2 hours. Each can of Grove White contains 24, one gram portions with each having 12 mg of Nicotine. The can its self is made of gold colored plastic with a plasticized paper label that seals the lid to the bottom well until you open it and there is a used portion compartment concealed in the lid! Now that you have the basics of Grov Svart, let’s see what the flavors are! Swedish Match describes Grovsnus Svart as a robust and well rounded snus with a strong tobacco flavor and a hint of Vanilla. While this is an accurate description, we think the flavors are reversed in their intensity. Grov Svart’s tobacco flavor is there but, actually takes second chair to the vanilla and pepper flavors. While you would think that the vanilla would bring the tobacco flavor out, it’s the tobacco that actually accentuates the vanilla and gives it an almost white chocolate flavor. The light peppery flavor also adds another dimension to the overall taste but, this is what we think, we want to know what your thoughts are. I'm relatively new to the swedish snus world and have only tried a handful of brands thus far but this is my current favorite. Like rikkie I taste a little anise and a very pleasant tobacco flavor which lasts a good while. Do yourself a favor and give it a try.

I have used Offroad Lakrit for years (loose)and while I still enjoy it, Grovsnus strong portion is my new best friend. Excellent flavor, easy on the lip, and a long, pleasant finish. I missed the vanilla completely, but taste anise and strong tobacco with an after-taste of coriander. But that's just me. Five stars.

This is my absolute favorite snus. I do not detect any vanilla in this tobacco, and to the best of my knowledge Swedish Match doesn't add vanilla. Allegedly licorice flavoring is added, but this I cannot detect. Basically, I taste very nice tobacco with a pepper accent which I attribute to the nicotine content of the stronger portioned snus. I usually prefer my tobacco to taste like tobacco, with the peppery flavor being an added bonus. This is my must-have, go-to snus.
